YO! this is J. Cake here bringing you the 1st Edition of MMFD. The following is more or less my OPINION on the state of the music industry, its artists, and their careers. As well as occasional steps they should take to establish, maintain, or restart their careers.
-DISCLAIMER-
this aint for the faint of heart.
there's a 90% chance that i'll say something about your fave
that you aint gonna like.
ready?
Keri Hilson.

Beyonce fans dont like her, Ciara fans dont like her, but let me tell you why I dont like her. I definitely think Keri is talented; she has a knack for catchy lyrics, and every time she sings "Miss Keri Baaaby" I get a little erection. She also tends to add a lot more to a track she's featured on.
HOWEVER, she started her career all wrong: taking shots at artists higher up on the food chain. And then to top it all off, she denied it later. Which of course made it worse. Keri has her fans, I'm sure. But that little maneuver cost her madd respect, and tons of potential fans. My advice is to accept the face that she may never be the "It" Girl, and continue to make nice little appearances on other people's shit. Thats all.

One of my favorite rappers ever since "Go DJ" came out, Wayne has ruled the radio for the past two years. Many have speculated that his upcoming jail sentence will deter his career. I dont think so. His next album, Tha Carter IV, has already been completed, with several videos already done as well. He's basically ensured that he will still be in the public eye while he does his year-long sentence. It'll be like he never left.
Nicki Minaj.

There's been a lot of controversy over this chick. She's been accused of everything from swaggerjackin Lil Kim to wearing butt pads. The self-proclaimed Harajuku Barbie first hit the scene with a string of mixtapes [2007's Playtime is Over, 2008's Sucka Free, & the one that really put her on the map, 2009's Beam Me Up Scotty]. Armed with a legion of fans she calls Barbies, Minaj has become everybody's favorite rap chick.
Well...almost everybody.
Recently nobody Baltimore rapper Keys [yeah, i dont know her either] took shots at Nick in this YouTube video Remy Ma remarked than when she got out of jail she was gonna make it "not so easy for Nicki". & Snoop Dogg Jr. Lil Mama has dissed her as well.
She even ruffled Lil Kim's feathers:

0.o
Here are a few outside opinions:
"Too bad she looks better than her raps sound. Sometimes that's what labels want. But in this case, the gimmick is too obvious to actually work."
"I like all of her songs, she's a breath of fresh air for the female rappers."
"Her voice could probably lead people to suicide."
"I love her, she's what the rap game has been missing."
Hmm. What these four people said more or less reflects whats being said about her in the streets, everyone is split down the middle.
I mean, she sexy, she knows when to smile at the camera, and she got an ass that wont quit. These attributes would be perfect if she was trying to be the next top porn star. But as an MC, that shit alone isnt gonna cut it. Her raps are cute and they rhyme to some extent, but they dont make any sense.
Pick ANY Nicki verse/song post-Beam Me Up Scotty and I bet my 50% stake in this blog that she aint talkin about nothinnn. Every once in a while she spits a line that's semi-epic "WE FLY IN LEAR JETS, MAKE A LEFT AT THE CLOUD!" But can we hear her go hard for an entire song? A whole verse?
While her army of Barbies and twitter followers may ensure a successful debut album, thats not enough for longevity. She should tone down that crazy, tacky, "hoodrat with a lot of money" way she dresses, get a ghostwriter, and hurry up and release her album before the hype dies down.
Beyonce.

She may very well be the only reason you're reading this post. The singer, with combined album sales of 100 million & 16 Grammys, has more or less become an icon in the past few years. So why dont some people like her? Here are a few often-used reasons as to why people hate on Bey:
She needs to take a break, I'm tired of seeing her.
Take a break for what? Why would she stop working just so you/your fave can sell albums? I think she should take a break before she wears herself too thin, but not so other bitches can get some shine.
She isnt even that talented.
I disagree. There are artists who can sing circles around her, people who can dance a lot better, and bitches who slay her looks/fashion-wise. BUT NO ONE HAS HER BEAT IN ALL THREE. And thats why she slays. We're not gonna talk about her acting though.
Her fans/stans are annoying.
They irritate me like chicken pox. But thats no fault of hers, and no reason to dislike her. NEXT.
Drake.

He's arguably the hottest rapper in it right now. He can hold his own on a song by himself, and he's capable of stealing a track as a featured artist [Birdman's Money To Blow; Timbaland's Say Something]. Drake holds the top position in a very narrow middle ground in rap music: Girls go crazy for him, and dudes like his music as well. I dont think a hip-hop artist has had appeal like that since Nelly came out. I'm anticipating his debut album, due out later this year. I think Drake will be around for a while.
Monica.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: She couldnt record a hit song if Clive Davis custom-made one for her ass. Monica can sing her ass off, but for some reason she just cant quite make it to the top of the heap. Maybe its the fact that she tries to quietly jack Rihanna's style? Who knows. All I know is if this next album flops, ima need her to pack it up and gone somewhere.
Brandy.

Since I discussed Monica, I might as well talk about the only reason she has a Grammy. Brandy ruled female R&B during the latter half the 90s, often competing with Aaliyah for the top spot. But I dont know...some time after Full Moon, she lost her way a little.
The quality of her music didnt necessarily decrease, but her sales did. "Talk About Our Love" from her 2004 album Afrodisiac should have been a much bigger hit than it was, and none of other singles from the album even charted. Human was a great CD, and still, lackluster sales. What she needs is a new approach and better promotion,
And thats what I think she's doing with her rap alter ego Bran`Nu. Some people might dismiss it as a gimmick, but she can actually spit! If she times her singles right, comes with a dope look, and includes a few raps throughout her album, she could end up back on top...maybe.
VOLUME 2 FEATURING RIHANNA, KELLY ROWLAND, CHRIS BROWN, EVE & LIL KIM COMING SOON!

Hmm, I like the general. Of course I'm going to disagree with Nicki. She hardly says anything in her songs... who does these days? But, she does go hard on most of the songs I hear her on. For a full verse at that, lol (Roger that, My Chick Bad, the Mariah Carey song her first verse was decent). I mean, she's never going to be seen as the world's greatest lyricists or anything, but if she keeps it up she has a chance of making female rappers more prominent. Hopefully all of them don't start trying to rap like her though.
Lil Wayne... some people hate on him a lot, but he's going to stay relevant. That's secure. Drake is going to be around a long time I feel. He's a good artist, has an ear for music and seems to be able to make good hits.
Keri... she's just boring to me for some reason. Even her feature on Asher Roth's song bored me. Can't even think of any other song I've heard her featured on at this point...
Beyonce is bad. I see her keep the whole Diva thing on lock down. Monica, lmao. As you said... she can't make a hit. And Brandy... well, the rap thing intrigues me. We'll see.
well i agree with this article fully, all these artist need some old school lessons on how to make it.
keri hilson has a nice voice, and is pretty, i think she still needs to find her niche though, and her target audience, or fan base. i think those shots she took only hurt her with the beYAWNce drones. i see ponential in Ms. Kerri Baby.....lol I love when she say dat.
Wayne is a sure bet,he will be here for a while.
Nikki,Nikki,Nikki...(sigh)...its like watchin somebody do a magic trick, you dont have much reason to think its going to wow you but yet you still wait and watch hoping that the surprise wow part comes. basically she just has to deliver on her slight hype. Her bite needs to be as good as her bark if not better. She does need a course in originality though, and drop all the gimmicks. the emphasis vocal delivery thing has gotten old and redundant, move on. its like when foxy brown does the Jamaican/Trini thing, like okay we get it, just flow. and she needs to put more thought into her stuff cuz its like rap for retards, she talks about nothing and its all so unrelated and random.its not rap its rhyme. just let wayne ghost write. we wont think no less of you chile.
Beyonce is like a rhinestone, pinatta that makes noises when u hit it, its just too much. know when you should chill. she is over exposed. thats why her tour flopped and her album sales are lower than the last. we need a break from you sweet heart. give people a chance to miss you. there cant be anticipation if there isnt time for any. Sade hasnt dropped a album in 10 years and still had major buzz when she came back because the music is quality and she dosent saturate media with herself. same thing with maxwell, long hiatus and still came back with a buzz, so yes it can be done. hell people are still nailbitting for a new lauryn hill joint!
Drake is hott because he is a hybrid artist, he can flow and sing, and do both well. as long as his album is hott, he is good. and based on his mistape and EP he is in good shape. he should just be sure to not get to cocky and not over expose himself. "it" status burns out if you let yourself be on everything all the time. it happened to lil jon,t-pain and countless others. moderation is key. exercise restraint.
Monica need soooooo much help its really not funny at all. she cant get a number one hit if it was already the number one song when she got it, it would fall off the charts like a brick tossed from an airplane. she sings the wrong songs usually and then her style be all over the place.she seems just as confused with her career as we are. she is destined to be remembered for just how long shes tried rather than how many accomplishments she actually had. but hey it worked for patti labelle, her hit to album ratio is way off, yet, she is a solid performer, a power house singer, and lovable as the day is long, not to mention looks amazing at her age. and with all that is a legend. well maybe monica should shoot for that.
Brandy needs to do what you do when you lose your car keys. *Retrace your steps from the beginning. cuz she has let her personal life distract her. she still got the voice, and can still make good music, but she needs to remember that theres is more stragety to it all. which she used to be able to do better than anyone in her category.its chess not checkers B. eyes on the board.
and im sorry they all need to know that a reality show is not the new promotion gimmick to jump on. it looks desperate. like a last minute attempt to keep people interested in you. monica still standing was a borefest. i painfully made it through like the first 3 episodes before i couldnt take no more. and im hoping brandy dosent drag herself down to her brothers antics. just connect with your fans and put out good real music. do some shows, mixtapes and get people back to enjoying your work and longing for it.
they wonder why people would rather pirate music than buy it? simple the shit they put out isnt worth the 9.99 you get 8 track with maybe 2 songs that are hits and 3 that are okay and the rest you skip past? not in this economy. its easir to just download the two songs you actually like. what happened to a cd with 15 tracks with about 9 really good ones and 4 okay ones and maybe 2 you dont really care for. that was money well spent. (sigh) the old days.
