Janet + Mariah + Tyler Perry = ?

Could divas Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey be working together on the next Tyler Perry film? If that sounds unlikely to you, think again: It could happen, and sooner than you think. While buzz is high for his next release, Why Did I Get Married Too?, the originator of Madea already has his eyes on his next project.
Perry wants to make a film adaptation of the 1975 play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf. Don't try to read all that in one breath. Perry mentioned in an interview that he was considering actresses Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kerry Washington, Kimberly Elise, Loretta Devine, and Macy Gray for roles in the film. Don't try to read all that in one breath either.
The play, by Ntozake Shange, is based on a series of 20 poems, each of which is about a nameless woman [only identified by a color of the rainbow]. Each poem deals with a different topic. Issues such as love, abandonment, rape, and abortion. For Colored Girls was first a small show performed at a women's bar in California, but soon caught many people's attention and ended up becoming a critically-acclaimed Broadway hit. A tv movie was made featuring early appearances by Alfre Woodard and Lynn Whitfield, but bringing the play to the big screen is a big deal for a lot of people, including Perry:
"Making a film of 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf' is a dream come true for me," Perry said about the project. "Ntozake Shange's play is a magnificent tribute to the strength and dignity of women of color, and I think audiences of all generations will be able to recognize and embrace the experiences these women represent. Creatively, this movie is one of the most exciting undertakings of my career." - Tyler Perry
For Colored Girls is set to begin shooting in June, and will be released later this year or early 2011. I'm kind of excited about this huge black ensemble cast that's trying to be put together. Only two of the above mentioned ladies [Elise and Carey] were on Perry's original list of actresses he wanted for the film, which included Halle Berry, Oprah Winfrey and Beyonce Knowles.
